Being off the road all summer has had the benefit of making more time to create new art—something usually reserved for the winter months. So it was a bit of serendipity when I was approached about drawing Lance Reventlow’s Scarabs just I had a huge hole in my drawing schedule. Ditto on the opportunity to draw one of the favorite cars from my youth, the Mercedes-Benz 280 SL. Sometimes, things just work out.
A true all-American sports car, the Scarab was designed and built by Tom Barnes and Dick Troutman for Reventlow Automobiles Inc, owned by Lance Reventlow. The Chevrolet 283 CI V8 engines that powered the Scarab to victory at the 1958 Riverside International Grand Prix were built by Traco Engineering. Scarabs are often referred to as “the most beautiful race cars” in the world. It’s got my vote.
The Scarab illustration is still in development but I expect to finish it up by the end of this month. I’m accepting pre-orders now for delivery in the first part of December. Only 25 limited edition fine art pigment prints will be run. Order yours here.
The “pagoda top” Mercedes-Benz 230 SL, 250 SL, and 280 SL of the mid 60s and early 70s has long been one of my favorite cars, having lusted over one owned by a neighbor when I was just a teenager. It’s been a fascinating car to draw and I’ve gained insight into the engineering behind that classic skin. The W113 illustration is available in your choice of exterior and interior colors along with a wide range of options and accessories with which you can personalize your print.
I expect to complete the artwork for the W113 by the beginning of the last week in November and am accepting pre-orders now. Press run on the “Pagoda Top” Benz will be 75 prints. Order yours here.
