One Christmas, many years ago, my brother and I were gifted a Strombecker 1/32nd scale slot car track set. It wasn’t much by today’s standards but, back then, it provided hours of enjoyment…and competition. The set came with two cars—a blue Jaguar D-Type and a red Ferrari 250TR. Maybe it was the track, the car, or the driver but the Ferrari always seemed the faster of the two cars and was frequently the source of sibling squabbles as to who would get to drive it. Drawing “Rosso” transported me back to those bygone days and a new found appreciation for, what can only be called, the voluptuous lines of the Testarossa.
In all, only thirty-three 250s were built between 1957 and 1961, nineteen of which were left hand drive models delivered to independent race teams, placing it among the rarest of Ferraris. The 250 TR achieved many racing successes, with variations winning 10 World Sports Car Championship races including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958, 1960, and 1961, the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1958, 1959 and 1961, the Targa Florio in 1958, the 1000 KM Buenos Aires in 1958 and 1960 and the Pescara 4 Hours in 1961.
