Mazda 787B
Sporting a Wankle rotary engine capable of 900 horsepower but detuned to 600 in race trim, Mazda’s effort for the 1991 running of LeMans focused on reliability, cornering, and fuel economy over straight line speed. Designed by Nigel Stroud with body panels made from Kevlar and carbon fiber by Advanced Composites in the U.K. the Mazda 787B—piloted by Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler, and Bertrand Gachot—was the only rotary powered, and first Japanese car, to ever win the 24 Hours of LeMans.
