The studio has been a very busy place since I returned from the Greenwich Concours with a whole list of new art on the drawing board. For my Corvette fans, the long awaited C8 finally go its due, starting with a 2023 convertible model sporting a Z51 package with body colored trim. Mid and rear engine cars are alway difficult to draw. With so much going on in the back half—engine, transaxle, brakes, wheels, suspension, etc.— it can be hard to give each component its proper due. In order for things to not come out as a muddled mess, it always comes down to making difficult choices about what bit most defines the car. In the case of the C8, i think it’s definitely the engine and took care to make sure it could be clearly seen. I’ve never really fancied drawing modern cars but have to admit, the lines of this new generation of Corvettes were a pleasure to pen.
In addition to the C8, and after some strong prompting from a couple of outside sources, finally got down to drawing an Alfa Romeo. There were plenty of post-war Alfas to choose from but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Spider Velocé so that’s the one (of what I hope will be several) I started with. I just love the simple elegance of the Pina Farina bodywork and have been enjoying the engineering differences between the Alfa and the more familiar (to me) British cars of the same era. There’s just a level of sophistication in the Spider that’s absent in most other sports cars from the 50’s and 60’s.
Both of these illustrations are in the home stretch to completion and I’m now accepting orders for signed and numbered limited edition reproductions of each. As with most of my other production car drawings, these are available in your choice of exterior and interior colors as:
- Framed or unframed archival prints in sizes 22″ x 16″ or 30″ x 20″ sizes
- On brushed aluminum composite using translucent inks sized 47″ x 23″
You can order you copy of the Corvette C8 here, and the Alfa (1955 through 1965) here.
