The first in a series of some of the most important competition cars from the 50s and 60s titled “The Color of Competition”, Blue #1 depicts the Peter Brock designed Shelby Daytona Coupe that won its class at the 1964 24 Heurs du LeMans with Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant sharing the driver’s seat. Each one of the illustrations in this collection represents, not only the story of the race car but something new in the way of technique or my approach to the art.
This began as an experiment with monochromatic backgrounds and took on a life of its own soon after. With my Scarab art, I had added front and back views to my more typical side view cutaway and decided to give combining the single color background with newly configured art. Continuing with the chromatic theme, I matted the art in a complimentary blue framed in simple black hardwood.
