A Night at the Museum

UPDATE – 6/5/2019

Smithsonion construction is underway! The new Nation of Speed exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum featuring my Group 44 TR4A print at life size is now being built with an estimated open date of sometime in 2021. If you haven’t yet read the story of how this most improbable event came to be please, continue on. I still find it pretty damn amazing.

My phone rang and, when I picked it up, there was a very pleasant voice on the other end asking if I had any interest in licensing  my Group 44 TR4A IRS illustration for a Smithsonian project. Rather uncharitably, the first thing I thought that one of my more twisted pals was pranking me so I asked that the caller send me an e-mail with the details and I would get back to them, citing that I route all licensing request electronically. While true, I really never thought I’d hear about it again and imagined my friend was laughing his proverbial ass off somewhere.

You can imagine my utter astonishment when, about a half later, and e-mail shows up in my box detailing the size and other mechanical requirements. I couldn’t make the call back fast enough.

“Yes, I can provide and 8′ x 16′ image.”

“Yes, I’d be happy to negotiate a standard one-time license.”

“Would it be too much ask that I receive an attribution?”

“No, that would be fine.”

“If you can provide me with the billing particulars, I’ll have a licensing agreement to you directly.”

“That would be great. Thank you.”

Click. And just like that, I’d licensed my TR4A print to the Smithsonian for an interactive exhibit being developed for the National Air and Space Museum set to open in 2021.

‘Incredible’ is the only word that comes to mind. This is not a craft that comes with many breaks. Mostly, you have to really love the work and take your satisfaction from telling the stories of some truly great cars because that may be all there is at the end of the day. To have something like this actually happen is, quite frankly, surreal…in the best kind of way.

I have about 20 prints left in sizes 12″ x 24″ or 18″ x 36″. All numbered and signed and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Archival prints from $185 – $235 or available on 47″ or 57″ brushed aluminum starting at just $725.

ON SALE THROUGH FATHERS DAY!
