With the latest edition of the 24 Heures du LeMans in the books (Toyota was the big winner this year) in the books, it got me thinking about the many LeMans winning, or just participant cars, I’ve drawn. Turned out to more than just a few. Jaguar, Triumph, Porsche, Ferrari, and the list went on. Most of these illustrations are available as prints although one or two of the original, large scale installations are still looking for their forever homes.
Truth be told, I didn’t start out to draw a series of LeMans cars, it was more about drawing cars with really good stories and just happened that many of them happened to participate in the world’s greatest endurance race. Some, like the Jaguar E-Type and the Healey-Repco XR37, never made it to the finish but were still fascinating stories of men and cars who, against great odds, entered the great race with every intent of getting to the finish only to be disappointed by bad racing luck. Others, like the Ford GT40 and the Porsche 917K left marks on the race that stand to this very day. Both cars were absolute beasts and both helped cement their respective manufacturers as racing powers.
