Race and Specialty

Of all the car categories I draw, the Race and Specialty group is the most purely fun…and easily the most challenging.

Race cars, especially old race cars, present a unique challenge to the illustrator. Accuracy becomes a moving target simply because, as race cars, they were most likely crashed and rebuilt several times by different owners before finally being dismantled for good or sold off to a collector. And most of the cars that have survived have been restored with varying degrees of historical accuracy. Photographic records of their racing hay-day are incredibly scarce. Most race cars simply weren’t considered that interesting in their own time. It typically takes decades before a particular race car gains notoriety—either because of a car’s significance within a successful driver’s career, or due to the car’s lifetime list of race victories, or simply because there aren’t many of them left. But for those mid-twentieth-century racers that call out to be illustrated, they necessitate a mighty long lens!

1965 Shelby GT350 and GT350R

$329.00

To qualify for the SCCA production racing, Ford had to homologate the GT350 and reached out to Shelby to modify 100 specially built Wimbledon White units that were shipped to Shelby-American in Venice, California. The street version of the GT350 differed only slightly from the race model in that it used a normal Mustang steel front bumper and valance and no roll bar.

Prints—1965 Shelby GT350 and GT350R illustrations are available as fine art pigment prints in:

  • 22″ x 16.5″size—open edition unframed, limited edition unframed, limited edition framed

  • brushed aluminum prints sized 23″ x 47″ by special order only
  • dye-sublimated large-scale backlit or unlit prints sized 38″ x 80″ or 47″ x 96″ by special order only

Blue #3—Scarab MK2

$829.00

A true all-American sports car, the Scarab was designed and built by Tom Barnes and Dick Troutman for Reventlow Automobiles Inc, owned by Lance Reventlow. The Chevrolet 283 CI V8 engines that powered the Scarab to victory at the 1958 Riverside International Grand Prix were built by Traco Engineering. Scarabs are often referred to as “the most beautiful race cars” in the world. It’s got my vote.

Prints—The Scarab MK2 illustration is available ONLY as a limited edition framed fine art pigment print, brushed aluminum, or large-scale display.

  • Only 10, signed and numbered prints will be run
  • 22″ x 16″size—signed and numbered limited edition fine art pigment print (framed only)

Bob Sharp Racing Datsun 240Z

What Peter Brock was to West Coast Racing, Bob Sharp was his equal on the East coast, successfully racing in a number of production classes over the course of several decades. Shown here in its original red livery as raced in 1970 and 1971 by Bob Sharp, the BSR 240Z is also available as the #38 car driven by Jim Fitzgerald in 1972. “This Huffaker TR8 was the last Triumph SCCA race car commissioned by the Jaguar-Rover-Triumph Group. It was completed in May 1980, and first competed at the SCCA June Sprints at Laguna Seca Raceway. It ran seven events during the 1980 season driven by Lee (Mother) Mueller, including the SCCA Runoffs at Road Atlanta where it finished in fifth place in C Production. Penske Chaparral 2K

$329.00

The Penske Chaparral 2K was the very first illustration I drew…and was paid for. That was 1994 and I waited 25 years to reclaim the images rights after I signed them away without having any idea what I was doing. In fairness, I never expected my doodles to turn into anything more than an effective way for me to amuse myself without getting into any trouble. Sometimes the best things are the ones you never plan for.

Prints—Penske Chaparral 2K illustrations are available as fine art pigment prints in:

  • 12″ x 8″ framed, limited edition fine art pigment print

Studebaker Avanti

$329.00

One of Raymond Loewy’s last designs, the Studebaker Avanti was a story of too little, too late for the failing Studebaker Corporation. Fewer than 4,600 cars, including the R2 supercharged variant, were produced over the Avanti’s brief two-year production span before Studebaker closed its factory in 1963. Called “the fastest production car in the world” upon its introduction, a modified Avanti reached over 170 mph with its supercharged 289-cubic-inch R3 engine at the Bonneville Salt Flats. In all, it broke 29 world speed records.

My Avanti prints are available in either regular or R2 variants and may be purchased as acid-free archival prints in two sizes—22″ x 16″ (framed or unframed) or 30″ x 20″ (unframed only), 30″ x 20″ framed canvas prints, 47″ x 23″ brushed aluminum prints (special order only), or backlit or unlit large-scale dye-sublimated prints (up to 30′ x 10′, special order only).
