Jaguar XKSS
Perhaps more than any other car, the Jaguar XKSS raises the question, “What might have been”?, had not the fire at the Browns Lane factory destroyed nine of the original run of twenty-five cars ending production and ushering in the E-type. Certainly, the XKSS might have never been built at all had not Sir William Lyons not wanted to recoup some of the investment made in the D-type race cars after Jaguar withdrew from competition. Sir William correctly assessed that the converted D-types would do rather nicely in the American market with its thirst for European performance cars. Would the XKSS have delayed the introduction of the E-type? Would Jaguar have continued to build additional XKSSs after the original 25 chassis had been converted? We will never know but we can still enjoy the remarkable lines and performance of these astonishing cars.
