New Print Sizes, Prices
Over the years, I’ve fooled around with various dimensions for my illustrations but always came back to a basic 2:1 format (24″ x 12″, 36″ x 18″), in part because I felt those dimensions looked right for the art and in part because it helped maximize paper use. In recent months I’ve been encouraged by several knowledgeable folks to do two things: 1) adopt a more standard print format and 2) use a pricing model…
Portfolio—The Art of David Townsend
I grew up around cars, picking up wrenches and helping my dad work on his Triumph TR3 before I was able (legally or otherwise) to drive. Over the ensuing decades since I started bending wrenches as a teenager, I’ve owned a parade of mostly sports and performance cars. The bulk of them have been British, but there’s been a sprinkling of German, French and even some America iron thrown in there as well. Like…
Lenticular Porsche 356B Art
You really have to see this to believe it—watch the mechanicals of the Porsche reveal themselves as you move your field of vision across the art. Having met only a year ago, photographer Bill Pack and illustrator David Townsend immediately took a liking to each work and wasn’t long before the two artists were planning their two-man show—Movable Feast—shown for the first time at this year’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. It wasn’t long after that…
Sports Car Art In Print
This year, I’ve enjoyed some most excellent coverage in the automotive press including articles in Jaguar Journal, Mesh New England, and soon, Porsche Panorama. Each publisher had their own take on my art. Russ Rocknak from Mesh New England ran into me at a show and we engaged in a free flowing interview of sorts while I was setting up for the event. Russ’s perspective seems to me a bit unique in that he has…

Monterey 2019 Wrap-Up
Thanks to everyone who stopped by and spent time with me at Automobilia 2019. I sincerely appreciate your interest in my art and I hope to be illustrating one of your favorite rides in the near future. A special thanks to Doug Buchanan from Garage Graphics who was nice enough to put up with me for another year. I’ve been back from Monterey and a fabulous 2019 event for a couple of months now and…
Jaguar MKII Project
As part of the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar MKII, I was invited by Peter Crespin at the Jaguar Journal to provide a three-part series showing the progress of my anniversary illustration from start to finish. The final issue (available around holiday time) will include a center spread of the finished work which subscribers are welcome to remove and frame. Once complete, a limited edition version (100 prints) will be available as either an archival…
Porsche—Excellence Was Expected
If you wondered where I disappeared to for most April, May and half of June, I had the privilege of creating 23 new illustrations for Karl Ludvigsen’s most recent update to his seminal book, Porsche: Excellence was Expected offered by Bentley Publishers. While the work was, at times, very intense, it was also a tremendous opportunity for me to gain more insight, first hand, on the development of both Porsche production and racing models from the 1948…
Penske Chaparral Re-issue
The Story Behind the Print The Gordan Johncock Penske Chaparral 2K was the very first piece I actually earned money for as an illustrator. The year was 1996 I was approached by a friend and business associate, acquainted with both Penske and Johncock who commissioned an illustration of the Chaparral 2K. It was the very first illustration I was ever actually paid for and what I didn’t know about licensing, commissions, and the whole business…
